I think that mos Def chose to sample from gil-Scott heron because he was a very influential in the African American music scene, even though I style of hip hop Is different it follows the tradition of black music. This is due to the fact that American soul and jazz music was created by black tradition so by sampling from a music piece like that it keeps the roots of the music flowing between hip hop artists.
